Artistic autumn for Blackout
|
London, UK, 26 November 2007 - Blackout, the largest supplier of drapes, rigging, starcloth and track has been hard at work this autumn providing the right backdrop for fine art, in two different London locations. While the company's products and services are perhaps better-known for their applications in music, theatre and corporate events where the emphasis is on supporting and complimenting the sound, vision and lights, the London gallery projects show they are equally at home in a more refined setting.
At the Boiler House Gallery, part of the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, Blackout was asked to design a sympathetic setting for a showcase of works by local artist Stuart Semple. The huge paintings, each measuring three metres high and five-and-a-half metres wide, were in 16:9 format and inspired by the screen ratio of cinema.
Working with lighting designer Chris Farkouh of Essential Lighting, Blackout supplied a truss box around the room from which to hang a black drape backdrop. The paintings were then hung in front of these and lit from fixtures which were also outrigged from the trussing.
Commenting on the success of the installation, Farkouh says: "We work a lot with Blackout and this project was a good example of that working relationship. By creating a space with event lighting in mind, they gave me the hanging positions I needed to light the paintings effectively - no small task when you consider the scale of the artwork."
Blackout were also instructed by event makers and caterers, Urban Caprice to create 'rooms within a room' in the Frieze Art Fair 2007 in Regent's Park. Held in structures at the southern end of the park, Frieze Art Fair showcases works from over 150 contemporary art galleries all over the world. It also includes specially commissioned artists' projects, a prestigious speaking programme and an artist-led education schedule.
Working within the tight brief from designer Rebecca Richwhite and project manager Victoria Summers Blackout installed a unique metal infrastructure in one of the marquees consisting of 500 curved scaffolding tubes suspended from two bespoke truss ground supports, creating three separate areas. The result was to create an unusual event space and catering area for the fair.
Chad Higgins, Technical Production Manager for Urban Caprice adds, "Urban Caprice work with Blackout on a number of events and for the Frieze Art Fair, they really showed how creative they can be in producing a fusion of art and environment. Their work and technical know-how is also exceptionally good, especially in terms of operating within a really tight time frame and in a limited amount of build space."
Summing up Blackout's artistic autumn, Installation Director Kevin Monks says: "Our work for large-scale events may attract the lion's share of publicity, but temporary art installations are, in many ways, just as rewarding. At Blackout we relish the challenge of being asked to use large-scale event techniques with sensitivity and precision, so that works of art can be accentuated in exactly the right way."
