Production team on-site rigging white infill drape

Drapes and rigging specialists Blackout was appointed by P&MM, Performance and Motivation Management’s production manager Matthew Abercrombie to help in the recent launch of the new Rolls Royce plant at the Goodwood Estate.
Abercrombie stated: “I’ve used Blackout before many times, and their lateral approach to a project always impresses.”
Goodwood, synonymous with the ‘glorious’ vintage race meetings of the past is preparing to share the podium with new neighbours, Rolls Royce, in their £60 million new plant, designed by guru architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw (critically acclaimed for Cornwall’s Eden Project).
The launch event treated valued Rolls Royce clients to a high-brow evening of entertainment by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rambert Dance Company, who performed a piece specially commissioned by Rolls Royce.
Blackout framed the action with a series of soft proscenium arches, rigged in black and grey serge. A custom-made white infill drape was used to dress the superstructure, making it softer and more inviting and less like a postmodern metal sculpture.
Blackout’s team of six, headed by Project Manager Kevin Monks, also handled all the on-site rigging, supplying the required trussing and rigging hardware for sound and video departments.
Abercrombie took on much of the event’s concept design. “ Blackout were creative, flexible and practical as always” he says, adding “The physical circumstances of the project meant they also had to work above and beyond the call of duty, and they rose to the occasion as always”
Also on the event team were Buffalo Power; set-builders Square 1; caterer Alison Price; Hawthorn Theatrical (lighting); Blitz (sound and video) and ESS who installed their SuperStructure; with the team backed up by a strong army of Gallowglass crew.
With meticulous attention to detail, the new Rolls Royce building has been partially sunk into the ground to blend with the surrounding Goodwood Estate. The roof is completely covered in foliage, and has rocketed Rolls Royce into the record books for producing the largest ‘green roof’ in Europe.
