Blackout helps Formula One quit the habit back to 2003 archive
May 2003

The F1 stage set
The F1 stage set
Drapes and rigging specialist, Blackout worked for London based production house, PCI to help realise the stage set for a national press conference announcing a one-year sponsorship deal between GlaxoSmithKline and the BMW Williams F1 team.

Staged at London's Riverside Studios, it's the first time Formula One has turned to the nicotine patch to help motor sports kick it's £225 million a year tobacco habit!

The pharmaceutical giant's NiQuitin brand will be displayed on the front and sides of their cars as well as on the sleeves of their drivers, Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya. The new livery was on display at the recent San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. The sponsorship deal's estimated value is £9 million a year.

Blackout's Chris Brain collaborated with PCI's Richard Jarman to achieve a stunning effect in a tight five-day turnaround. Blackout supplied all the trussing and copious quantities of blue velour to dress the set, which provided a stylish backdrop for the two F1 speed machines positioned centre stage. Working with the production team on site, Blackout built the truss and suspended the blue velour around the set perimeter - meeting the deadline and more than satisfying GSK's specifications.

Pci:Live's Production Manager Richard Jarman commented:

"We had to guarantee a quick turnaround for our end-client, GSK, who's very topical announcement put the pressure on in terms of media significance. The Blackout team responded immediately, pulling out all the stops, with a great 'can-do' approach to realise a simple, highly effective set."

Blackout's Chris Brain is currently working with Set Designer Adrian Smith for MTV Europe at Pierre Cardin's Futuristic home – Palais de Bulles for their sensational annual Cannes Film Festival party.
