Blackout was once again called upon to provide the production rigging and drapes for the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards held at the Echo Arena Liver, Liverpool on Thursday 6th November 2008.
Working closely with the MTV Europe Music Awards' production team including James O'Brien and Maggie Mouzakitis, Blackout demonstrated outstanding attention to detail and ability to work to a tight deadline. They provided a complex infrastructure of truss and rigging to meet the exact requirements of a detailed and demanding design.
In total Blackout flew 92tons of sound, lighting, video and rigging equipment including 10tons of actual lifting hoists from nearly 300 points. This included 32 hoists for sound, 90 for lighting and an incredible 80 hoists, 400m of Black H30v Prolyte Truss and a 10m Black Truss Circle for the integral XL Video BarcoMistrips Video ceiling which radiated out across the whole arena.
The central backdrop to the main stage was a 12m x 8m Roller Projection Screen which was made up of Blackout's own system of modular carbon fibre rollers and encoded motor and control.
In addition to the main show Blackout supplied several effects for the performers and the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards presenter, Katy Perry. Under the guidance of Director Hamish Hamilton and Band Producer Sarah Currie, Blackout helped to realise the designs of Florian Wielder to create a unique projection surface made up of 25 cubes of white screen material attached to a 10m x 10m StageCoLayher System incorporating performance space for The Killers.Video Screen Content Editor, Richard Turner, then projected stunning moving images whichcreated the illusion of three-dimensional movement within the cubes.
Blackout also supplied a flown grid of Black Prolyte which glided in for Take That's performance on 10m per minute Kinesis Encoded Hoists. This truss suspended 60 x 5m vertical XL Video BarcoMistrips panels to create a 'video forest' which the band performed in. Kinesis encoded hoists were also used to fly presenter Katy Perry on a giant banana during one of her links.
Blackout Director Kevin Monks said "It was a very complex show to rig with several performance spaces through the arena where there was a heavy concentration of rigging equipment. This meant the order of build and subsequent access had to be very carefully considered. The success of the project was helped by the co-operative relationships betweenall the suppliers who were sympathetic to each others particular demands. That and the overall guidance of Maggie [Mouzakitis] who was integral to the smooth running of the pre-production and build."
Meanwhile, another crack team from Blackout was busy waterproofing Albert Dock for the after event party. The team donned waterproofs, harnesses and hard-hats to suspend drapes above the perilously cold water below. The drapes created a cosy, party atmosphere for the star-studded celebrations that continued until the early hours.
