As part of the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool on Thursday 6th November, Blackout was commissioned by production agency Design Arrival to transform the Albert Dock into a party venue for the main sponsors' after-show party. The party was held in a series of bars and restaurants along the docks linked by the quayside walkway. The 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards was sponsored by edc by Esprit, Sony Ericsson and Dell.
Part of Blackout's brief from Design Arrivals' Toria Richardson and Matt Gates was to keep the elements of a northern coastal winter at bay, ensuring all the artists, guests and sponsors remained warm and dry throughout. Blackout's project manager, Tim Searle, designed a system using 100m of outdoor PUFC drapes to line the outer edge of the dockside, attached to a series of tensioned steel-wire rope catenaries. The inside edge was then dressed with plush black velvet drapes to give a warm, stylish finish. Several of the bars were also lined with black velvet, using Blackout's Easi-build Pipe and Drape, to create press areas, cloakrooms, a dramatic entrance way and the main stage backdrop.
As you'd expect, the safety of the crew and guests was paramount and Blackout worked closely with Health & Safety specialist Steve Kearney to ensure the access and installation was undertaken within the prescribed 'Wind and Event Safety' Action Plan. Using fixed and hand-held anemometers, the wind was monitored throughout the build and during the event.
Blackout's Tim Searle said, "This was a particularly challenging project taking into account the exposure to the elements, proximity to deep-water and the tasks we needed to perform. Working closely with Toria Richardson and Anthea Roy of MTV European Networks, we came up with a solution that was both safe and effective, enabling us to transform the outdoor space into a luxurious indoor party area with the level of finish you'd expect for such a high-profile event."
